“Educators Serving Together”

The mission of the School of Education is to foster the development of educational, health, and human performance professionals grounded in a caring commitment to God, community, and individuals. The School’s programs are designed to provide an intensive knowledge base, to enhance reflective practice, and to promote life-long professional competence, service, and excellence.

The School of Education is organized into the Department of Education, the Department of Health and Human Performance, and Graduate Education. It includes the Child Development Center, the Center for Professional Development, and education student services and field experiences. The School of Education offers the Bachelor of Science in Education, the Bachelor of Arts, and the Master of Arts in Education.

The School of Education serves as the primary unit for all the state-approved teacher education programs. The mission of the unit, in collaboration with the liberal arts faculty and P-12 educational partners, is to provide a biblically based education which prepares knowledgeable, reflective, collaborative educators committed to serving others in order that all individuals may learn and develop to their fullest potential and interact with each other and their environment with respect, compassion, and fairness.

The Teacher Education Program includes 21 state-approved programs leading to Ohio licensure. Consult licensure program requirements listed within specific departmental sections of this catalog (noted in parentheses in the list following) and program guides available upon request in the School of Education; Mitchell Hall - Room 300.

Requirements for undergraduate students in any of the licensure programs include a minimum 2.75 for the major and cumulative gpas, passage of Praxis I prior to completion of 45 semester hours, MyPlan assessment reflection, positive faculty recommendations, satisfactory field and student teaching experiences, Declaration of Good Moral Character and BCI/FBI report, TB test report, and on-going professional portfolio submissions. In addition, the Department of Education requires a cumulative gpa minimum of 2.75 to register for any education course at the 300 level or above.

The Praxis I basic skills tests of reading, mathematics, and writing should be taken during EDUC 112 with minimum scores of 175. Remedial courses are available if scores are below 175. Students meeting all degree and licensure program requirements and Praxis II requirements are eligible for an Ohio two-year provisional license. After employment and completion of an Entry Year program and passage of Praxis III, licensees are eligible for a five-year professional license.

Teacher Education Candidate Proficiencies

The Malone University Teacher Education Program prepares candidates who are committed to serving collaboratively and reflect the following proficiencies:

1. Demonstrate ways in which a Christian worldview informs educational practice.
2. Apply sound principles of teaching, learning, and advocacy.
3. Master the content for which they have educational responsibility.
4. Demonstrate competence in the process of planning developmentally appropriate practices.
5. Exhibit effective techniques which promote learning for all students regardless of race, culture, gender, creed, or ability.
6. Identify organizational and behavioral management strategies that create an educational environment conducive to effective learning and growth.
7. Evaluate and support student learning and growth by utilizing varied assessments to inform instruction and interventions.
8. Display professionalism and ownership of professional growth.
9. Use technology as a tool for instruction, communication, collaboration, and creativity.
10. Collaborate with family, teachers, community, and other stakeholders in student learning and growth.
11. Initiate and sustain conversation in an organized, clear, and confident manner, using standard English, in written and oral form.
12. Exhibit dispositions for educators committed to serving together by:

    3. promoting stewardship,
    4. believing all students can learn and grow.
