Library Services

The Everett L. Cattell Library, built in 1972 with seating for 294 students, has more than 181,000 book and periodical volumes, 605 current periodical subscriptions, 692,000 microform units (including complete ERIC documents microfiche from 1989 to 2004), more than 3,600 music CDs, and various multimedia materials.

The library, which is automated through the Innovative Interfaces Innopac (III) library automation system, is a member of the Ohio Private Academic Libraries (OPAL), a consortium consisting of libraries from twenty-four colleges and universities. Through the OPAL Catalog (available via the library web page of Malone’s web site), the library provides access to the 3,840,000 items held by the OPAL consortium. Books can be requested by students from any on- or off-campus computer for delivery to the Malone library within four days via statewide courier delivery. Students can also use the online catalog to discover what materials have been placed on library reserve by their instructors.

Through its participation in OPAL, Malone is a member of OhioLINK, a statewide central catalog and resourcesharing consortium for most of Ohio’s universities and colleges. Malone students may order materials through OhioLINK’s catalog containing more than 11 million titles and 48 million items for delivery to any OhioLINK library in about four days. Malone students may also go to any OPAL or OhioLINK library and borrow books directly. Nearby OPAL/OhioLINK libraries include Mount Union College, Kent State University (Kent, Stark, and Tuscarawas campuses), Walsh University, The University of Akron, and College of Wooster.

Regular Malone library books circulate to Malone students for three months, but can be recalled after three weeks. DVDs circulate for one week. Malone music CDs and books from other OPAL and OhioLINK libraries circulate for three weeks and can be renewed four times. Periodicals and reference materials must be used in the library.

The library is a partial depository for United States government documents. Additional government documents can be obtained by interlibrary loan from other depositories in the region.

Students can conduct their own database searches in more than 200 computer-based periodical indexes and reference databases. The library’s databases add 48,853 unique full-text journal titles to the library’s current print subscriptions. Many of the databases that are accessed through OhioLINK provide the full text of journal articles. Among these databases are Academic Search Complete, Business Source Complete, CINAHL (nursing), ERIC (education), Sport Discus, America History and Life, BIOSIS (biology), Education Research Complete, GPO (government documents), LexisNexis (Academic, Congressional), MEDLINE, and PsycINFO. In addition, the library provides two InfoTrac databases: Business and Company Resource Center, and Health and Wellness Resource Center, as well as ATLA Religion Database, Christian Periodical Index, and Social Work Abstracts. Individual instruction on searching any of these databases is available upon request.

The library is also a member of OCLC, which provides access to more than 158,595,000 titles in more than 71,000 libraries throughout the world. Through OCLC, the library can obtain virtually any book or periodical article through interlibrary loan. Items that can be obtained through OPAL or OhioLINK are free. Items obtained from outside these consortia may cost money, depending on service charges from the supplying library.

The library has microfiche/film readerprinters for printing from its large collection of microfiche and microfilms. Black and white or color photocopy machines are also available for making copies or scanning to email. In addition to providing Internet access, the library’s 24 computers include many software programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.). Additional computers are available in a computer lab in the basement of the library. The library also provides fax services.
