GEN 110 - Portfolio Development(2) Malone University recognizes that not all learning takes place in the classroom. There are two types of prior learning that may be awarded college credit: 1) learning through work, home, community, and other environments and 2) learning from professional and technical training.
A portfolio is a collection of documents consisting of a résumé, summary of college course work, chronology (listing of significant dates), autobiography, technical/professional training, and life-learning essays.
To petition for prior learning credit, students must complete a two-credit-hour course, Portfolio Development for Assessment of Prior Learning (GEN 110). A letter grade is assigned for the course. The sections of the portfolio that include documented training and lifelearning essays are reviewed for additional credit.
Essays and training may be reviewed for up to 28 semester credits. Each life-learning essay may be evaluated for up to three credits. There is no limit to the number of essays written within the maximum number of credits allowed. Credits awarded for training are based on the content of instruction and number of clock hours of Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Also required is an articulation statement of what was learned in the training.
The essay is a narration of knowledge and skills that may relate to life or work experience. Essays can cover a variety of special topics. For example, a student could write about personal involvement in a community organization/agency. Business topics include Business Procedures, Quality Control, Small Group Supervision, etc.
The two-credit portfolio course (GEN 110) counts as elective credit. Essays and training can apply as elective credit or in some cases toward general education requirements. For example, an essay on personal involvement in a community organization/agency will fulfill a Liberal Arts/Social Science requirement.
It is advisable to complete the portfolio course before beginning the MMP curriculum. The portfolio course helps prepare the student for the writing requirements in the management program.
