ENG 381 - Linguistics and Style (3) Where do word meanings come from? How can one word mean different things in different contexts? What is the nature of metaphor? How can the sound of a word contribute to its effect? These and other questions will be considered in this course that provides a broad introduction to the field of linguistics: the study of language structure and its use. We will focus on what the formal study of language can reveal about how language works, how humans utilize language, and the effects of it. We will gain an understanding of phonetics, morphology, semantics, and syntax-with a particular emphasis on how an understanding of these aspects of language can be useful to writers and to readers.
Prerequisite(s): ENG 200 , 231 .
Offered Spring 2024 and alternate Spring semesters.
