EDUC 544 - Phonics and Structure of English Language (3) This course emphasizes the importance of phonological and phonemic awareness as the foundation for phonics instruction. Teachers and teacher candidates will explore the implications of how the brain learns and the effects on the ability to read. Current research and evidence-based instructional practices will focus on methods of teaching and assessing phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, structural analysis, derivational patterns, spelling, writing and fluency. The teaching of diverse learners, and utilizing various instructional approaches will be emphasized. Systematic, analytic and analogical approaches to phonics instruction will be presented and practiced. Cross-listed with SPED 544.
