ART 409 - American Art (3) This course covers the development of American art from the Conquest through the 1970s. Special attention will be given to how art responded to/and impacted the Christianization of the territories, the development of a new nation, manifest destiny, the major wars, industrialization, women’s rights, and social and cultural conflicts. The course explores the way in which artists and architects give expression to the tensions and sensibilities of each period. Among major themes of the course are the problem of America’s self-definition, the impact of religious and scientific thought on American culture, Americans’ changing attitudes toward European art, and the American contribution to Modernism.
Offered Fall 2017 and alternate Fall semesters.
