(3)
The course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills involved in understanding the DSM classification system and completing a multiaxial diagnosis. Legal, ethical, and multicultural issues are explored as they pertain to the classification of mental disorders and the procedures involved in using a multiaxial diagnostic system. Students learn the limitations of the DSM and understand how diagnostic labels have the potential to be abused and misused. Students learn the description of/and diagnostic criteria for mental disorders and conditions, differential diagnostic considerations, and the types of comorbid conditions that occur with each mental disorder. Case studies are employed to provide students with opportunities to practice using the multiaxial diagnostic system. Videos are used to illustrate some of the major disorders that professional counselors will encounter in clinical practice. Prerequisite(s): COUN 569, 682.
