Music, BA


(Bachelor of Arts)

A student may pursue a music major with any one of the following three emphases: general music, music ministry, or music production.

Keyboard and Theory Placement Tests are required for all music majors prior to beginning the first semester of classes.

In addition to the University requirements listed in Majors and Minors , acceptance into the Music major requires passing the piano proficiency, being approved for applied study at the 300 level, and passing the sophomore review.

12 hours of applied and ensemble credit as follows:


2 hours of primary applied music at the 100 level

2 hours of primary applied music at the 200 level

2 hours of primary applied music at the 300 level**

2 hours of secondary applied music at the 100 level or above

4 hours of approved ensemble credit

Note(s):


* If the student does not pass the entire piano proficiency examination at the conclusion of MUS 253, applied piano must be taken each semester until the exam is passed.

** 1 of the 2 hours of 300-level primary applied may be replaced by MUS 399 (depending upon chosen emphasis).

The Music Major (with choice of emphasis)


General Music


The Music major with an emphasis in general music is designed to concentrate on performance (i.e., instrument, voice, piano/keyboard, and conducting) and provides the option for other directed studies such as opera, music history and analysis, world music, or film scoring. It consists of the 35-hour musicianship core plus the following for a total of 48 credit hours:

Music Ministry


The Music major with an emphasis in music ministry is designed to prepare students as church musicians and worship leaders. This includes an individually designed practicum of observation, planning, and teaching in a church setting under the supervision of a qualified church musician. It consists of the 35-hour musicianship core plus the following 19 hours for a total of 54 credit hours:

* At least one year of primary applied must be at the 400 level. (MUS 499-Senior Recital may replace one semester of MUS 400-applied.) Primary and secondary must be of the following:

  • Piano
  • Guitar
  • Voice

** The church practicum will be supervised and placement will be made in two churches, with emphases in two of the three following worship settings: traditional, contemporary or blended services.

Other Requirements:


1)   Piano Proficiency completed before acceptance into the major, regardless of instruments in Worship Leading Proficiency

2)   Recital attendance each semester of enrollment

3)   Musicale attendance

Music Production


The Music major with an emphasis in music production, not to be confused with a traditional music degree, is a degree in modern music technology. It is designed to successfully develop musically oriented skills in the field of music production. It is a liberal arts program for the music student, which is project-driven from composition to finished product execution. This blending of technology and art in an entrepreneurial context creates an audio portfolio for the graduate seeking entry-level participation in the music business industry. It consists of the 35-hour musicianship core plus the following 19 hours for a total of 54 credit hours.

1)    Piano Proficiency completed before acceptance into the major

2)    Recital attendance each semester of enrollment

3)    Musicale attendance

4)    Applied music in primary must reach 300 level by graduation. Primary or secondary applied must be in keyboard, drum kit/percussion or guitar/bass.
