The use of language is one of the most basic elements of our humanity; through it we establish community, come to self-understanding, and even receive divine revelation. In the department of Language and Literature students are provided many opportunities to hone their language skills and grow in their linguistic knowledge. In doing so, they expand their personal resources for understanding self and others, and they learn more about the human condition by studying the language, stories, poetry, and ideas of others. They improve their ability to think creatively and analytically, and to communicate articulately and effectively.

In the broader context of Malone University, the study of language and literature increases our capacity for love of neighbor, for appreciation of the beauty and possibilities of language, and for critical inquiry into the ways language reflects or alters our fallen world. Our core goals include fruitful dialogue with intellectual and cultural diversity, development of our abilities to relate language and literature to cultural and historical contexts, and extension of our skills in written and oral communication.

Students in the English  and Spanish  majors study language, literature, and writing; they may enter a variety of careers, particularly those using their skills in language, communication, and critical thinking. Some graduates take their skills directly into the realms of business and government, while others pursue graduate education in preparation for such careers as law, ministry, or college/university teaching. The Integrated Language Arts (ILA) and Spanish Education majors prepare students for teaching in grades 7-12 for ILA and K-12 for Spanish. Separate minors in English , Writing , and Spanish  provide opportunities for personal enrichment and the development of language skills that will complement a variety of academic programs and career pathways.
