ENG 382 - Living Traditions: Mary Shelley

(3)
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus deals with the monstrous in and around us, revealing the dark aspect beneath creation’s mystery and our quest for knowledge. Shelley gave us the first modern monster and a story that inspired (and still inspires) myriad tales across genres. We will examine the Romantic, Gothic, and scientific contexts in which she wrote and look back at the myths and stories that influenced her, the Promethean myth, the book of Genesis, and John Milton’s epic Paradise Lost. That vantage will shed light on present-day retellings and narratives of mad scientists, monsters, and superheroes that-whether in literature, comic books, or film-extend the Frankenstein story.

Prerequisite(s): ENG 200.

Offered Fall 2018 and Fall 2021.

Living Traditions courses illuminate ways in which writers, writing from within their social milieu and in a given form or mode, use art to explore vital questions of human existence. Starting with a representative figure, these courses explore that author’s historical and literary influences as well as the contemporary legacy, examining ways in which literary artists and their ideas continue to transform culture.
