This course examines the transformation of China from imperial power to modern state, from the decline of the Qing dynasty to the rapid modernization of the post-Mao era. This study gives special attention to the cultural, economic, political, and social impact of revolutionary change on ordinary Chinese throughout the period.

Prerequisite(s): HIST 111 or 112.

Offered Spring 2016 and alternate Spring semesters.
